Kopi & Karya

“Kopi & Karya” is an exciting George Town Festival 2026 campaign that invites audiences to discover the vibrant heart of George Town through a delicious and immersive F&B trail.

In collaboration with 10 beloved local cafés, the campaign brings the festival’s theme, “Beyond Boundaries”, to life through exclusive festival-inspired menus, signature city-pulse drinks, and artisan bakes created especially for the occasion. As audiences journey between performances, they are encouraged to savour these unique culinary creations that celebrate the city’s rich creativity and culture.

More than just a cup of coffee, “kopi” represents the warm, comforting pulse of everyday life. Paired with “karya”, the Malay word for “artistry” or “creation”, it honours the craft, passion, and imagination behind every offering.

At its heart, “Kopi & Karya” reflects the belief that art should not only be seen, but also tasted. It transforms George Town into a living gallery where flavour meets creativity, inviting festival-goers to experience the city through all their senses.

“My body is a headless train. My body is a legless boat.” Premiered in 2025 to critical acclaim, the award-nominated “Lament of the Wandering Head” by Sun Son Theatre is a haunting, female-led performance that blends live music, physical theatre, and storytelling. Inspired by the flying head spirit of Southeast Asian folklore, the work reimagines myth as a powerful reflection on migration, displacement, and the fractured histories of the Chinese diaspora. Performed in Mandarin and Penang Hokkien, the production creates a rare bilingual soundscape where language, movement, and music intertwine. Combining traditional Taiwanese percussion with Southeast Asian gongs, chanting, and ritual rhythms, “Lament of the Wandering Head” invites audiences into a visceral theatrical journey where the body speaks as powerfully as words.
