For generations, humanity has lived under the comforting certainty that the sun will always rise. Yet what if that certainty could no longer be taken for granted?

Performed by ZXC Theatre Troupe, “MATAHARI” is a visually striking post-apocalyptic fable that explores the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world. Once revered as the source of life, the sun now stands as a silent witness to centuries of human ambition, exploitation, and neglect. As environmental collapse looms and the fate of the sun itself hangs in the balance, humanity is forced to confront the consequences of its actions.

Blending powerful storytelling with compelling imagery, MATAHARI invites audiences into a future where darkness threatens to become permanent and the promises between people and planet have long been forgotten. In the face of an uncertain tomorrow, the work poses a haunting question: if the sun were to disappear, what would become of us?

The Web of Deceits

Step into a world of mischief, magic, and adventure with Paper Monkey Theatre’s “Web of Deceit”, a lively hand-puppet performance inspired by the beloved Chinese classic, Journey to the West. Follow Tang Sanzang and his loyal disciples—Monkey King, Piggy, and Sandy—as they journey through danger and deception. When the cunning Spider Demon traps Tang Sanzang and Piggy in a magical web, Monkey King and Sandy must outwit the demon in a daring rescue mission. Filled with humor, suspense, and playful surprises, this engaging performance introduces audiences to the art of hand puppetry while bringing timeless values of courage, loyalty, wisdom, and teamwork vividly to life.

TERANG | Heritage in Motion

Pasar (the Malay word for market) is more than a marketplace—it is a space of exchange where cultures, stories, knowledge, and communities converge. Across Malaysia and Southeast Asia, the pasar has long been a place where traditions evolve through everyday interactions, reflecting the region’s rich diversity and vibrancy. Inspired by this spirit of exchange, “TERANG | Heritage in Motion” invites artists participating in the TERANG Projection Mapping Competition 2026 to reinterpret the pasar through the medium of projection mapping. Heritage architecture becomes a living canvas for storytelling, where light and motion transform familiar façades into immersive, site-responsive narratives. Rather than treating buildings as mere surfaces, artists are encouraged to engage with each structure’s form, history, and character, revealing new perspectives on the places we thought we knew.

Converge 匯聚

Emerging from the earth like a living organism, “Converge” by Taiwanese artist Kuei-Chih Lee transforms Taman Kejiranan Macallum into a space where nature, people, and the city come together. Inspired by George Town’s history as a port city shaped by migration and cultural exchange, the large-scale installation reflects on coexistence through five sculptural forms that rise organically from the ground. Intertwining like a growing settlement, the structures merge into a single collective form, echoing the many communities, languages, and traditions that have long flourished in Penang.
