Yudi Yap, the nightingale of Nanyang, has carved a name for herself with her silky vocals and soulful renditions. Her captivating performance is a breath of fresh air in the oldies scene amidst the constraints in today’s entertainment industry, evoking nostalgia for an elegant era.

Cham Cham Fun will feature local popular songs in multiple languages especially the famous Nanyang tunes in 50 & 60s of Malaya’s entertainment industry, by Yudi Yap and accompanied by WVC the Jazz Ensemble. Get ready for an unforgettable night of classic Chinese oldies with a touch of jazz.

Off the Chores presents the bittersweet moments of housewives’ daily routines, which include cleaning, cooking and washing, with endless repetition. Combining live music and physical movements, the performance encourages audiences to take a deeper dive into the gender roles within a family, telling a story that is full of laughter and tears.

Sun Son Theatre is one of the top performing arts groups in Taiwan that combines live music, physical movements and drama in its productions. The group is the winner of Summerhall Lustrum Award in Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017.

FLAG OF PEARLS & A HOUSE FILLED WITH WEALTH AND PROSPERITY

Macallum’s very own Madam Ooi See Han from Beng Geok Hong Puppet Theatre Troupe is set to present ‘Flag of Pearls’ and ‘A House Filled with Wealth and Prosperity’.

‘Flag of Pearls’, happening on 24 July, is a legend detailing Dik Ching’s conquest of the Khitan Kingdom of Western Liao and the challenges he faced in retrieving the Flag of Pearls, a national treasure.

‘A House Filled with Wealth and Prosperity’, happening on 25 July, is a legend detailing the importance of diligence as well as honesty and how a naive man who possessed these qualities managed to overcome adversity and prosper.

Be sure to catch the dying art form of potehi (traditional glove puppet show) before it’s gone!

EUPHORIA PENANG MODERN DANCE ENSEMBLE

Funded by the Penang State Government and supported by Hunza Group, the Penang Modern Dance Ensemble, popularly known as Euphoria, is Penang’s own homegrown ensemble that provides unparalleled training and opportunities for dancers to work and perform at local and international platforms. It is helmed by Aida Redza as its President and Artistic Director.

Seize the opportunity this George Town Festival to immerse in ‘Scents of Harmony’ choreographed by Chia Kai Xian, where the dancers pay tribute to food and our tradition of sharing by moving us through a variety of colours and familiar tools from the kitchen. Don’t forget to catch another breathtaking dance piece titled ‘The Calling of Our Heart’ which represents the voices of performing artists as they strive to keep their arts and traditions alive.

Imagine the melancholic sounds of Er-hu, the strumming of Lang Tin Tang, the melodic rhythm of a Rebana coupled with gongs, and the interlocking beats of Gendang with a splash of Chinese cymbals, that’s the trademark performance of a homegrown multiracial group Culture Shot, also known as LA LA LI LA TAM PONG. There’s no better time to enjoy an evening of old Hokkien songs and other traditional tunes, served with a taste of Penang!
