Programme Details

The stories of jazz in Malaysia and Taiwan resonate with many parallels. In the middle decades of the twentieth century, this uniquely American music found a fertile new home on distant shores, carried by a cosmopolitan cast of international and local musicians. And in the course of the journey, that distinctive sound became inflected with local musical genres so that today, the unique, hybrid sounds of Malaysian and Taiwanese jazz stand at the centre of innovative popular culture.

Join three great music makers—Tay Cher Siang (piano), Stacey Wei (trumpet), and the legendary Rich Huang (drums)—as they reflect on jazz as a world of creativity, connection, and common humanity. You are invited to eavesdrop on this conversation that will share deep stories about history, about musical craft, and about broader social dynamics. Three voices that possess the knowledge and deference one needs to bring to any cultural discussion and the treasures of insight and information you can hope to leave with.
