``Lights On``: Open Call for Projection Mapping Virtual Residency
George Town, Penang, Malaysia, 7 April 2021: For many creatives, the new normal brings new ways of creating. That’s why George Town Festival 2021 is venturing into the world of digital media while adapting to the new normal. In collaboration with Filamen, the Festival is set to turn a micro version of George Town into a tech-powered, story-telling beauty in its virtual projection mapping installation programme, “Lights On”!
“Lights On” aims to showcase George Town’s diverse cultural and historical landscapes through pulsating lights and swimming patterns projected onto a small mockup of the heritage city. “Lights On” is accompanied by two main components: a one-month-long virtual residency programme and a virtual exhibition. The virtual residency programme aims to select six residency artists to create their micro projection mapping designs under the guidance of professional advisors and curators. Meanwhile, the virtual exhibition showcases the residency artists’ designs, which will be projected onto a micro mockup of the heritage city of George Town. “Lights On” is scheduled to be streamed live via the George Town Festival social media platforms, alongside a sharing session participated by the residency artists of the virtual residency programme.
As such, the Festival is inviting local and international tech-savvy artists, designers, and creative geniuses who can connect viewers to the city’s diverse cultural and historical landscapes to submit their portfolio for its virtual residency programme. The virtual residency programme is a gathering of artists who will work in sync, support one another and use this change of pace to think and create differently. It embodies the idea of making arts accessible to all, regardless of age, ethnicity, or background, as well as providing opportunities for more people to experience the arts in their communities.
Each applicant may choose to participate in the programme as an individual or in a group. Only six (6) applicants will be selected. Each participant/group will be awarded with a RM1,000 (One Thousand Ringgit Malaysia Only) stipend. To apply, register and submit your portfolio at bit.ly/3sB6RBq. The submission deadline is 30 April 2021 at 11.59pm (GMT+8). No entry fee is required.
