Chelsia Ng
Born and raised in Penang, with over a decade of experience in acting on television, film, theatre, singing, songwriting and performing, Chelsia Ng is known for her quirky tunes and distinct voice, and has come a long way since her singing and acting debut on the hit English SITCOM, Kopitiam.
For the George Town Festival 2022, Chelsia is returning home with her well-loved originals inspired by her hometown, including the debut of a brand new Penang Hokkien song. Written and inspired by her longing for home, this lovely tune features some of Penang’s most loved hawker heroes and will bring a tear to any foodie’s eye.
In addition to the stories and tunes she will be performing about Penang, Chelsia will also be bringing the audience on a journey of nostalgia through her repertoire of heartfelt originals and her unique take on specially selected classics.
Chelsia will be supported and accompanied by Ui Li on keys, Wafi on bass, Farouk on guitar and Jonathan Scully on drums.
Culture Shot
Imagine the melancholic sounds of an Er-hu, the strumming of a Lang Tin Tang, the melodic rhythm of a Rebana coupled with gongs, and the interlocking beats of a Gendang with a splash of Chinese cymbals. Now, put all these instruments together, and you’d end up with an amalgamation of ethnic sonorities — literally a melting pot of cultures.
Also known as La La Li La Tam Pong, Culture Shot is made up of 6 unique individuals:
1. Ang Eng Bok – Main vocal, composer, Lang Ting Tang (Hokkien Beggar Guitar) player
2. M.Sivasilan – Gendang player, vocal
3. Tan Yean Chang – Er Hu Player, vocal
4. Kasiman bin Basman – Rebana player, vocal
5. Clarence Ewe – Chinese Aux percussions, vocal
6. Kang Su Kheng – Aux percussions, vocal
Although from different races and musical training, they are united by their love for music and culture. Their music is playful, as the name suggests, and as they put it, “with every song, we try our best to serve a taste of Penang”, evident by songs closely tied to old Hokkien songs and respective traditional tunes.”
