Le Corbusier Maquettes: The representation of modern architecture
French-Swiss architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and international luminary Le Corbusier believed that the old, chaotic, and dilapidated cities should be demolished and replaced by orderly and rigorously planned metropolises. These should be centred around a central business district filled with glass and steel skyscrapers, occupied by corporate offices and the residences of the rich. Smaller skyscrapers, set in the middle of a vast green space, would radiate outwards, with all the amenities residents might need within easy reach. His ‘Cité Radieuse’ marked a break with the contemporary city by abandoning its class system, with housing allocated according to family size rather than economic status.
Trace the evolution of Le Corbusier’s mastery of space and time and his influence on the cities where his legacies live on and beyond in this exhibition! With 17 of Le Corbusier’s buildings on the UNESCO World Heritage List and his profound impact on the 20th century, the exhibition – featuring models of Le Corbusier’s iconic buildings from the private collection of RT+Q Architects – is an excellent place for learners and lovers of architecture.
This exhibition is presented by USM x Alliance Française Malaisie and curated by RT+Q, in conjunction with the Le French Film Festival and the George Town Festival 2022, with the support of the Le Corbusier Foundation (& Alliance Française de Singapour) and sponsorship by Escatec.
Either / Or Design is an artisanal jewellery brand founded in 2019, which encapsulates the true meaning of slow fashion. Su Ling Teoh, the founder and designer-maker behind this Malaysian brand, has brought a new definition of handmade jewellery, by presenting the Malaysian heritage in the form of modern jewellery design. Through exploration of contemporary techniques, Su Ling handcrafts each piece of jewellery with specialised materials including jewellery-grade polymer clay and Czech glass.
Born and raised in Penang, the founder’s love for her hometown has led her to create Either / Or Design’s signature collection, “Heritage”, inspired by the traditional Peranakan tiles found in George Town. Although a one-woman show, Either / Or Design strives to promote appreciation and preservation of the heritage of Penang through original creations that highlight the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage City.
Either / Or Design was selected by Penang Global Tourism, the State Government’s organisation, as the local artisan in their July 2021 edition of Penang Artisan Feature. She was also selected as one of the collaborating artists for George Town Festival 2021. Her unique designs have gained the attention of the mainstream media including The Star, Options by The Edge Malaysia, Guang Ming Daily, Penang Art District, and The Expat Magazine.
