Immersive Exhibition
Catch the physical and virtual exhibition of “Cahaya XR: First Edition”, featuring new mixed reality immersive works by Penang artists White Bones, Kabilan Murali Dharan, and Ysabel Loh! The trailblazing exhibition fuses local stories with immersive technology such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality to demonstrate new ways of reimagining Penang’s traditional stories and heritage while showcasing how the metaverse can be used to hold space for inclusive community storytelling. The exhibition can be experienced in person at The Whiteaways Arcade in the heart of George Town or virtually at the Cahaya XR Metaverse exhibition space. Festival-goers can also expect a series of artist talks, workshops, and XR play spaces for audiences young and old to explore how art, technology, and local storytelling intersect in the metaverse.

Create your own artwork in Tiltbrush
Curious about creating art in a VR headset? Explore themes of Penang and bring them to life in Tilt brush, a VR application allowing you to paint in a 3D virtual environment. Running thoughout the Cahaya XR exhibition at The Whiteaways Arcade, stand a chance to win prizes for best Penang themed artwork!

Meet the artists in residence!
Cahaya XR: First Edition is a product of a 3 month mentorship encouraging diverse artists to explore the possibilities of merging XR creation, community engagement and art. Cahaya XR serves as a platform and offers creative technology support to artists who are interested in exploring new ways of presenting work. Whether you have caught the exhibition or are planning to, attend this session to gain some insight on the work presented at the festival from the artists themselves as it might foster a new found appreciation of the experiences. Join us in a conversation with the 3 artists in residence, digital artists- White Bones (Benjamin & Cindy), multidisciplinary artist- Ysabel Loh and performing artist- Kabilan as they share the in and outs of their journey with Cahaya XR!

Community and social impact in XR Storytelling and the Metaverse:
A panel discussion with international creative XR producers and storytellers
Join panel members and XR producers Michelle Brown, Michaela Ternasky-Holland and Ingrid Kopp as they discuss the possibilities for XR creative work to achieve real world social impact and empower communities. Sharing examples of their own work and best practice, the panelists will explore immersive projects taking audiences into humanitarian conflicts, tackling climate change with NFTS and supporting marginalised communities to have a voice. Ultimately we ask the big question – with the metaverse looming – how do we work towards creating online spaces that value connection, diversity, inclusion and equality?

Kids AR mask workshop!
An exciting opportunity for kids aged 7-12 to make their own Augmented Reality face masks! In this workshop young people will journey into a fantastical storyworld to explore the strange creatures living there. Working alongside a local artist, they will draw, colour, collage and bring to life these characters in 3D to create their very own unique AR face masks. After the workshop each participant’s mask filters can be shared with friends and family.

Explore your digital Identity Through AR Mask Making
If you were born into a digital world, what would you be? It is predicted by 2030 people will spend more physical conscious time in the metaverse than the real world. In this artistic and playful workshop start exploring your digital identity in the metaverse by creating your own augmented reality mask. Guided by a Maitree facilitator, participants will use a simple online design platform to explore and create digital collages which we will then turn into 3D mapped face filters using the Spark AR platform. Please note this workshop is for those interested in artistically exploring digital identity in our modern lives – it is not for those interested in finer detailed technical instruction of Spark AR.

Spotlight on Malaysian XR Creators:
An online dialogue between Malaysian XR Industry professionals
An exciting spotlight event on three distinct Malaysian XR Creators – Fariz Hanapiah (EDT), Suan Goh (CtrlD) and Luvenia Kalia (Cahaya XR). Each creator will share some background to their work, what drives them and together they’ll discuss XR in a Malaysian context -the challenges, opportunties and what lies ahead!
