Hands-on Workshops

Learn along with prominent Penang-based artists and try your hand at drawing Penang’s prized heritage without leaving the comfort of your own home. The “Step by Step” series of online workshops provides a platform for members of the public from all walks of life to indulge in hands-on experiences while embarking on a journey of remembrance. Artists Leong Wai Khong and Lefty Julian will be guiding participants to create their own doodles and drawings on the George Town Festival tote bag, which will be a unique and memorable creation for them. This specially curated series of virtual workshops will get participants to draw Penang’s iconic trishaw and ferry, granting them the opportunity to delve deeper into the story of Penang, thus learning to cherish these historical icons with immense beauty. The artists will conduct both workshops on Zoom with a fee of RM30 for each. The fee is inclusive of the tote bag, colouring materials, and shipping cost.

Step by Step with Wai Khong

In this one-hour workshop, artist Leong Wai Khong will guide you to create your very own doodle of a trishaw, which is one of the oldest modes of transportation in Penang. Be prepared to doodle the city’s living heritage on the George Town Festival tote bag to your heart’s content!

About Wai Khong

Leong Wai Khong is an illustrator, doodler, digital designer, and an educator who loves to explore drawing and painting in acrylic, ink, oil paint, mixed media, and digital colouring of his hand-drawn or ink-illustrated works. He graduated from Birmingham City University with a Master of Arts in Visual Communication in 2005. His 2020 painting with the theme “Mau in Fantasy” won him a runner-up in the Amateur Artist category in the DreamScape Art Contest. Leong was also the Penang Open Art 2018 winner – with his work titled “Dreams – Sound & Keyboard Installation”. His painting was shortlisted in the 2019 UOB Painting of the Year award. His works were published in Asia Illustrators Collections 2016, 2017 and 2018 and were also featured in the Batugether Art Exhibition 2016, Penang Art Competition 2016, and Frozen 2 Fan Art Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

Step by Step with Lefty

In this workshop conducted by Penang-born artist Lefty Julian, you will learn how to draw the state’s iconic ferry on the George Town Festival tote bag. Lefty will guide you, one step at a time, throughout the one-hour session to create your very own drawing of the iconic Penang car-carrying ferry, which is worth reminiscing after the service ceased operations in 2020.

About Lefty

Penang is a source of endless inspiration for many artists, and one of them is Lefty Julian! This Penang-born artist is known for his Penang’s culture and heritage-themed creations, for example, the popular Marking George Town steel rod sculpture series, Pulau Tikus Community Stories bus stop graphic art series, and Butterworth Heritage Interpretation panel series! He is also a comic book artist with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. He was the senior art director of Gempakstarz, editor-in-chief of Left Pocket Creatives (Shanghai) and The One Academy Penang’s part-time lecturer and course planner.
