The George Town Festival (GTF) is an annual festival held in Penang, in honour of the city’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Once a humble celebration, the George Town Festival is now a global festival anticipated by many. International New York Times reviewed it as a ‘festival growing into a major Asian arts event’ while CNN Travel recognised it as ‘Best of Penang rolled up in one big festival’. The Guardian, a British daily newspaper, cited the festival as ‘one of southeast Asia’s most exciting celebrations of culture, heritage and community’.
Under the theme ‘A Festival for Everyone’, the Festival celebrates our diverse arts and cultural heritage encompassing visual art, theatre, music, dance, film, photography and more. In addition to the classic mainstays like ‘When Night Falls’, ‘Art in the City’ and ‘The Extravaganza’, there will be pre-Festival pop-up performances, community engagement programmes, ticketed shows, exhibitions, installations, talks, sharing sessions and more. The annual GTF is a project by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), organised by TLM Event, endorsed by the Penang State Government and fully supported by the City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), and Penang Global Tourism (PGT) in celebration of local and international works of art.
