How do maps and plans reflect and also shape our cities, communities, and identities? It is believed that Penang, founded in 1786, provided the template for Singapore's town planning. Modern Singapore is providing a possible development model for Penang today. Penang and Singapore were conjoined in 1867, 150 years ago, when both became part of the Straits Settlements administered under the British Crown. Our histories have overlapped, converged, diverged, and re-converged over time, a duet set in motion by Malaya’s former colonial government. Drawing their inspiration from history and current issues, artists from Malaysia and Singapore present their reflections of this symbiotic relationship. Joined by the Crown is curated by Sharon Cheah.
