Northern Hemisphere is a project by Lightforge, a Penang-based visual projection team of ethical hackers, artists and engineers. Inspired by the work of inventor Buckminster Fuller, the team creates a one-of-a-kind 360° immersive visual experience within a geodesic dome structure.

Lightforge projects have always focused on creating experiential A/V performances, video sculptures and guerilla projection arts, thanks to the ingenious collaboration between George Town-based artist Ammar Khalifa, multimedia developer/projectionist John Kuan and project manager Kim Khiang Toh. Some of their other notable works were featured at Urbanscapes 2014, the ASEAN Youth Leaders Conference 2015 and Tiger Translate 2015 for UK DJ Tim Exile.

Meet the Lightforge team and discover the in-depth workings of the technology behind Northern Hemisphere’s interactive visual displays. If you are an artist, programmer or just love experimenting, join our dome-hacking session with your own laptop and watch your own visual/digital art creations get projected onto a 3D dome surface, with the use of a professional 10K lumens EPSON projector.

Segments:

  1. Presentation - Who is Lightforge?
  2. Presentation - Understanding the Technology Behind Northern Hemisphere (30 mins)
  3. Workshop - Basic Touchdesigner (WINDOWS) Workshop (1 hour )
  4. Activity - Dome is Open for Hacking (2 hours)

13-14 Aug, 6-10PM (Saturday & Sunday): Slumb-A-Chamber

Curated by Dhiyanah Hassan and Lightforge’s Ammar Khalifa, Slumb-a-chamber is an immersive, interactive art installation within Northern Hemisphere’s dome. The space is designed thematically by the collaborative works of 4 artists - connecting various physical and sculptural forms with moving images to produce a compelling narrative into an exploration of identity. Highlighted during this exhibition is a live camera performance by the zany, outrageous and multifaceted spoken word poet Skid More (Bali Gong Show).

20 Aug, 3-10PM (Saturday): Raising The Bar x Break Mission

Dance-group extraordinaire Break Mission Malaysia, underground hip-hop bloc Raising the Bar and Lightforge collaborate for a full-day benefit live performance and non-profit music, dance and arts exhibition that you will not want to miss. Breakdancing contests, live digital graffiti and professional break demos combined with kinect-driven motion graphics are just a few of the visual treats in this fun-filled day. Pick up a unique item from local streetwear brands while immersing yourself in Malaysian hip-hop culture with DJs, beatbox, all styles and battle rap performances.

Instead of an entrance fee, you are invited to bring non-perishable food donations to Break Mission, for distribution to a selected charity home in need.

21 Aug, 5-10PM (Sunday): Hack the Dome (Part 2)

Come make friends with the Lightforge team and discover the in-depth workings of the technology behind Northern Hemisphere’s interactive visual displays. Equip yourself with a new skill at a workshop on Quartz Composer (OSX), a visual programming language used to develop and process graphical data and interactive graphics. If you are an artist, programmer or just love experimenting, join our dome-hacking session with your own laptop and watch your own visual/digital art creations get projected onto a 3D surface, with the use of a professional 10K lumens EPSON projector.
